CHAPTER 13

PARKER

It’s as if all the events that happened so far were leading up to this one moment—the moment my life took its turning point. The moment I realize that this whole thing is no joke. When I found out that I really, seriously have a job to fulfill.

Finally, the revelation about Luna not being allowed to see her reflection makes sense. Because up until last night, and speaking to Luna about it, I didn’t think it strange that there were no mirrors in my uncle’s home. Didn’t find it weird that even the mirrors in the Corvette I’d driven a week ago had frosted surfaces. All glass surfaces in that mansion had been frosted, and the reason why is such a shock that I want to go back, find my uncle, and beat his head in.

We’re standing in the small living room after breakfast and Autumn’s telling us about how Annwn has two portals that lead to the human realm and how there are different ways to enter. Only a small few are permitted with the ability to create one. Turns out, the only way to enter right now is through a mirror. Strangely enough, it has to be Luna to do it. She was the key herself, all along. I didn’t question why. It was all so much to absorb. No one has entered or exited Annwn for decades, until now.

So now we’re here, in this moment. The moment Luna and I will travel to another realm.

I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I’m fucking terrified. What will happen? Who will we meet? Autumn and her never-ending secrets. She never mentioned why she wouldn’t come with us although Luna begged her to. She’d just said we had to go without her. That we should get to know that side of ourselves. And that it was time.

My hand is on Luna’s bare knee, tingling where our skin meets.

“It will be okay, love. I’m here,” I tell her telepathically.

She’s trembling. Up until this point, she didn’t realize the seriousness of the situation either.

Autumn returns with a large hand mirror and places it in front of Luna’s face with no warning at all. I should have realized how dire the situation seemed to Autumn but failed to see the clues. I hold in my snarl at Autumn’s bluntness.

I thought Luna was going to react the way she’d done last night, but she somewhat calmly takes the mirror and stares back at her own image. My heart breaks a little more for her as I see her hands shake. Luna glances at me, and I coax her on. She takes a second look. This time, tears silently find their way down her cheeks. I want to kiss them away, but I’m aware of Autumn’s proximity, daring me to interfere.

Autumn tosses her long silky dark hair over her shoulder.

“My beautiful Luna.” There are tears in her eyes as she says it reverently.

Her voice is awed at this moment. She quietly tells Luna that certain words are supposed to be said in order to open the portal to Annwn.
